Hakuoki Kyoto Winds Review

Hello everybody, Shaun Meyers here to share my thoughts on Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds by Idea Factory and Design Factory. I received a copy of the game for review purposes. Like all of my reviews, however, this had no effect on my thoughts and experiences.

Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds is an otome based visual novel that follows the story of a young woman named Chizuru. While visiting Kyoto to look for her father, she finds herself caught up in the affairs of the Shinsengumi. At first this isn’t a good thing because of what she had seen. As the story progresses, however, Chizuru winds up befriending the captains of the Shinsengumi. The story isn’t as it seems early on though. The story quickly devolves into battles that shake the foundations of the Shinsengumi to it’s core.

It’s worth mentioning that this is only the first part in a 2 part series. This has been met with negativity, unfortunately. When it originally released in Japan in 2008, it came in 2 parts as well. So, this HD Remaster coming in 2 parts too isn’t very surprising.

The story to this visual novel is easily one of the best that I’ve ever experienced. The story is enthralling, the twists and turns throughout kept me reading for hours on end. There is a lot of different choices to make and they all reveal different parts to the overall story. The game demands multiple playthroughs in order to experience the entire story, with it’s 30 different endings.

The excellent music compliments the game’s story incredibly well too and never did it feel out of place. The art was gorgeous throughout as well and I especially liked the character artwork.

Overall, Hakuoki Kyoto Winds is absolutely amazing. From it’s story to it’s art, it provides an enthralling experience and it kept me at the end of my seat throughout. The only downside I can think of is the wait to find out what happens in part 2 lol.

Thanks for taking the time to read the review folks. I’ll be back with my next video soon, until then, happy gaming folks!

Shaun Meyers (Kyo Akiara) out!
