Shape of the World PS4 Review

Hello everybody, Shaun Meyers here to share my thoughts on the PS4 version of Shape of the World by Hollow Tree Games and Plug In Digital.

Disclaimer: I received a copy of the game through for review purposes. Like all of my reviews, this had no effect on my thoughts and experiences with the game.

Shape of the World is an abstract first person adventure game that sees you exploring a beautiful, yet minimalist, world. The game has no dialogue or even text and your enjoyment is solely based on an audio/visual experience. Don’t let this deter you from trying the game though, it’s a beautiful game and if you enjoy art as much as I do you’ll enjoy this game a lot.

The game is an exploration game so wandering around and seeing the unique world is the game’s main pull. The world you’re exploring is beautifully minimalist in design and it has many unique things going on. Fish fly in the sky, there’s octopi walking around on the ground, hedgehogs too. As you walk around the trees and grass will pop in to reveal some rather stunning scenery.

While exploring you’ll often come upon various types of statues. By pressing the R2 button while targeting them, you’ll activate them. By activating each statue in a set, you’ll reveal a golden path that will lead you to hard to reach areas.

There are also triangular portals that you travel through to get to new areas of the game. These portals are your main objective in the game and going through them changes the color of the world. There are also new trees and environs that you’ll get to see and explore as well. Environs include mountains, caves and forests to name a couple.

Shape of the World is a bit longer than I was expecting as well. If you take the time to explore and collect all of the seeds, you’ll get at least 4+ hours out of it. Some seeds are pretty well hidden too so you’ll have to look everywhere. These seeds can be used to plant trees in the game world. They also change the color of the game world, much like the portals.

Overall, Shape of the World has a beautiful and relaxing world to discover but it’s definitely not for everyone. If you enjoy arty first person adventure games then you’ll find the game’s abstract game world a sight to behold. If not, then you’ll find yourself bored within the first few minutes. So, I recommend the game to fans of the genre, you’ll enjoy this one quite a bit.

Thanks for taking the time to read this short review for Shape of the World folks. I’ll be back with my next review soon, until then, happy gaming folks!
